United Airlines 757 – Premium Transcontinental Business Class (LAX to EWR)
Flying United between Los Angeles and Newark is practically like flying international business class. This is not your normal domestic premium cabin. The seats are lie flat, they serve a four-course meal, and they offer top shelf spirits.
In an effort to capture the lucrative entertainment and financial service travelers between the two cultural capitals – United rolls out the red carpet!
Here’s a review of my recent transcontinental business class flight:
Prior to departure – I visited the United Airlines Club at LAX. Transcontinental Business Class passengers get complimentary access. The massively upgraded Club was simply amazing (especially the outside terrace!). I will have a separate post on that shortly.
At the gate: Business Class passengers had priority boarding – and within seconds of sitting down, the purser solicited my pre-departure cocktail request.
United’s 757 Premium Transcontinental Business Class features lie-flat seats that are fully kitted out! It takes seconds to fall asleep on one of these beauties!
The seat glamorously reclines 180 degrees and is fully flat - - which you rarely see on domestic first-class routes. They're big as well - I am just under six feet tall – and I could not touch then end of the bed.
The 757 seat also comes with power outlets, extra lighting, and a large table if you need to squeeze in some productive work time as you streak across america.
Upon boarding, every seat had a stack of luxerious Saks Fifth Avenue bedding on it. Again – a nice touch on a relatively short five-hour flight!
I loved the collectable amenity kits that United had on this route. It was a commemorative tin for the recently retired Boeing 747.
Each one included eyeshades, ear plugs, dental care, and Cowshed lip balm! I guess they want to make sure you arrive refreshed – and ready to kiss your loved one!
The meal service began with pre-dinner cocktails and warm nuts. I went for the 12-year-old scotch – but the Crafthouse Moscow Mule my seat-mate had looked inviting as well!
The first course featured a fresh salad with Kalamata olives and mozzarella - and- a chilled appetizer: goat cheese, mango refresh and pumpernickel crostini.
For the main I could have had steak or chicken – but I went for the butternut squash manicotti which was prepared with mascarpone, arugula and toasted pepitas! It was one of the best best pastas I've ever had at 35,000 feet!
To finish it all off I had a glass of Courvoisier VSOP fine champagne cognac and a plate of cheese. Impressively the purser made sure my cognac was warmed in the oven before he served it. (No cold brandy on his watch!)
By the time United's signature ice cream sundae service rolled out - I had to pass. Even though it look totally tantalizing – there wasn’t any more room!
Expect premium, international grade service when you fly between Los Angeles and New York City on United business class. It’s a fabulous way to jet between the two cities.
