NCL Getaway Dining Review - Gourmet Spreads at Sea
NCL's Getaway is on steroids when it comes to dining options! With over 18 different places to accumulate calories - I didn't go hungry on this ship.
Every type of cuisine was there to tempt me: Asian, Indian, Italian, Mexican, British, Japanese, French, Modern-European, Argentinian, and of course good old American.
When I cruise, I tend to focus on the 'complimentary' dining as much as possible (Why spend money when there are so many options each night?).
Here's a review of the places I frequented on the Getaway on a recent cruise to Northern Europe:
The Tropicana is the "Grand" dining establishment on The Getaway. With it's soaring ceilings, white jacketed serving staff, and polished silverware you definitely get the feel you're on a majestic ocean liner!
If you have a ballgown - this is the place to wear it! And if you want to strut your stuff between courses, it even has a dance floor.
I loved the food in this venue! My favorites included the Swordfish Salad, the Prawn Pasta, and Asparagus Risotto.
Taste & Savor
Taste & Savor are sister restaurants across from each other on Deck Six. They have identical, cool, urban vibes - Savor has blue accents and Taste has pink ones.
In fact the menus are identical as well since they share the kitchen with the Tropicana Dining Room. So all three restaurants offer the same spread each night. Picking one has more to do with what decor tickles your fancy.
For some odd reason, Taste & Savor were always difficult to get into after 7PM. There was always a waiting list and people hanging out at their shared lobby bar. To be honest - I headed to the Tropicana most nights as it was easy to get a table and the cuisine on offer was the same.
The Garden Café is The Getaway's buffet restaurant.
Before I even talk about the food I have to say this venue had the BEST views, bar none, when it came to dining on the ship. The vistas at the back were spectacular.
The Grand Café hosts feasts morning, noon and night! I went there for breakfast most days as they had a huge selection. At dinner, they rotated themes including smorgasbords focused on seafood, asian specialties, grilled meats, and Italian favorites.
During the evening, Moderno is an Argentinian chiaroscuro restaurant serving up an endless parade of grilled meats - for a $29 fee.
However, Moderno also featured a complimentary "Express Buffet Breakfast" each morning - and on sea days they had delicious lunch buffets highlighting different countries. On my sailing I sampled specialties from Spain and India.
Shanhai's Noodle Bar
I have a deep LOVE for Noodle bars. They always have great energy, the food comes out fast, and the conversation is always animated. Shanghai's delivers all of that in spades – in a fantastic, modern setting.
The noodles were so fresh and tasty - I went back several times (but don't tell my diet coach that)!
Wasabi Sushi was one of the highlights on my cruise.
This venue does charge a fee for dinner - but it's worth it. I loved the cosmopolitan atmosphere - and the Sushi Masters were creative geniuses. I particularly enjoyed savoring their spider rolls!
This was a memorable cruise on the cuisine front. I have sailed on a number of NCL vessels this year - and I have to say the chefs on The Getaway were the best! The presentation, quality, and taste was simply marvelous!
I felt like I was on a gourmet tour. I am still having dreams about the epicurean delights I sampled on this voyage - and nightmares at the gym trying to get off the extra kilos!
